Adam’s story
13-year-old Adam was born with a chronic heart condition and needs urgent open-heart surgery to improve his quality of life.
Adam, a Jordanian national, was born in Dubai and is the only child to loving parents. At 6 months-old he was diagnosed with a life-threatening heart defect (hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy) and has endured several medical procedures to rectify the issue.
Adam is in Grade 7 and although he is a good student his illness is impacting his studies as he is often lethargic and lacks concentration. He also suffers from breathlessness and cannot play with the other children in the playground. Because of this he often shies away from activities with friends and enjoys playing computer games alone.
“Our son desperately wants to be like the other children. As a teenager he wants to be independent however his illness is very limiting and, of course, we are scared to take our eyes off him in case his condition deteriorates. We are very hopeful that with this surgery his health will be restored and he will thrive in school and enjoy a happy, healthy social life.”
